Mike gained invaluable experience as a Police Operational Mentoring and Liaison Team Commander and District Chief of Police Mentor, while deployed to Afghanistan in 2009-2010. During this timeframe, he was essential in bringing an ineffective and disorganized police force with a small handful of trained police officers, to a unified 150 man strong, professional policing organization. He was instrumental in the expansion of the police force, negotiating for the incorporation of several different policing organizations into a single entity, and the approving authority for infrastructure development within the district. He was the recipient of the Chief of Defence Staff Commendation as a result of his leadership, professionalism and success within a counter-insurgency theatre.

He has conducted numerous consultations with the United States Army and the United States National Guard where he coordinated joint training objectives and support, and also disaster response training events for both Canada and the United States.

Mike has worked closely with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, the Canadian International Development Agency, the United States Army and National Guard, and also several different indigenousness forces including the Afghan National Army and Afghan National Police.
